State Wrestling Review

Wow! Sorry I haven't posted in a few days, but this was the craziest weekend all year (two state tournaments, Cat-Griz basketball, not to mention the beginning of District Basketball Tourneys!)

Anyways, I hoped you all liked our coverage. And if you didn't know already, you can watch all the footage we shot over the weekend from State Wrestling and State Swimming on our website at KTVQ.COM. Click on Sports Xtra!

So let's recap:

State Wrestling was insane. On Championship Saturday, the Metra was almost completely full with fans parents, not to mention the 600+ wrestlers that competed over the two days. What emotion in that room!

First, congrats to Cascade-Simms wrestler Ryan Leonard, who became just the 16th 4-time state champ in Montana history. When you saw him in action, you just knew he was going to win. He overpowered every one of his opponents and was in complete control of every match from the opening whistle. Congrats once again on an amazing achievement.

As for the team results...Flathead is on a level of their own. 410 points?!? They broke their own Class AA scoring record they set last year...by 62.5 points! They put 10 wrestlers in the finals, and took home 5 individual state championships on their way to a state 3-peat and an undefeated wrestling season. Skyview had a very solid tournament with only one less wrestler than the Braves, finishing 2nd in the team standings by over 50 points, but still fell 150 points of Kalispell. Wow.

Congrats to all the other state winners (Class A = Havre...back-to-back champs; Class B = Glasgow...new Class B scoring record of 254 team points; Class C = Arlee) and on the Billings scene, congrats to Tanner and Tucker Sprenkle for each winning their first stat title (Tanner at 119 and Tucker at 125).

See ya'll next year!
